The Skin / Integumentary System
The 3 layers of the skin are:
1) Epidermis
2) Dermis
3) Subcutaneous Layer (Hypodermis)
The subcutaneous layer is made up of adipose tissue / fat cells / areolar.
The 3 main functions of the subcutaneous layer is warmth (insulation), protection, and energy.
Functions of the skin include:
Sensation
Heat regulation
Absorption
Protection
Excretion
Secretion
Vitamin D production
Melanin formation
Growth and Repair of the skin
Cell formation - new cells are produced by cell division (mitosis).
Keratinisation (protein) - this is the flattening and hardening of the skin, hair and nails.
Desquamation - this is the removal of dead skin cells.
Also, melanin is the skins pigment.
What factors affect the ageing process?
Health - dark circles, lack of colour, bags under the eyes.
Lifestyle - tiredness, gym, snacks.
Medication - dry out skin, blemishes, thin skin.
Age - makes the skin thin, pigmentation, loss of elasticity.
Diet - blemishes, greasy, papules, pustules, dehydration.
Smoking - yellow skin, lip lines, lose the lip shape (corrugation), weep yellow liquid.
UV Rays - sunbeds, outside, skin cancer, ageing, pigmentation.
Stress - hair loss, wrinkles, weakens organs, blemishes, menstrual cycles.
Medical Conditions - Medication, thin skin - diabetes.
Climate - sweat, blemishes, broken capillaries, dryness.
