Scales of production

There are 5 main types of production which you need to know for product design. These are:

1. One off/jobbing production

This type of production is where the customer provides a brief and the designer creates a product that is individual to that brief. This type of production is expensive, as it requires lots of labour and is time consuming, as well as sometimes requiring skilled workers. An example could be a set of iron gates which a customer wants personalising with their family crest.

2. Batch production

Batch production is where a number of identical products are manufactured by specialised workers. Manufacturing aid is sometimes needed, but more often than not only general tools and equipment are used. Batches can be as small as a handful or as large as several thousand.
