Research Methods
What is an Experiment?
A controlled situation which the researcher manipulates one variable to discover its effect on another variable while the other variables are held constant.
Things to Control:
- PARTICIPANT VARIABLES (e.g. age/gender/ethnicity
- SITUATIONAL VARIABLES (e.g. heat/noise/distractions)
- INVESTIGATOR VARIABLES (e.g. body lang/tone)
How to allocate for Individual Differences:
Random Allocation: unusual examples are spread over both groups
Repeated measures: same participants, use them twice.
How to control situational variables:
All must follow the same procedure:
- same order
- same timings
- equipment
