Research Methods

What is an Experiment?

A controlled situation which the researcher manipulates one variable to discover its effect on another variable while the other variables are held constant.

Things to Control:

  • PARTICIPANT VARIABLES (e.g. age/gender/ethnicity
  • SITUATIONAL VARIABLES (e.g. heat/noise/distractions)
  • INVESTIGATOR VARIABLES (e.g. body lang/tone)

How to allocate for Individual Differences:

Random Allocation: unusual examples are spread over both groups

Repeated measures: same participants, use them twice.

How to control situational variables:

All must follow the same procedure:

- same order

- same timings

- equipment
