How is Tybalt presented in Romeo and Juliet? /25m

Tybalt, although not one of the key characters in the play, has a significant impact on the events of the play. He is notorious for his angry personality and vengeful attitude, and is renowned at starting quarrels and fiery disputes with his enemies, the Montagues.

Tybalt is portrayed by Shakespeare as a bitter and constantly angry individual who possesses a burning hatred for the Montagues. He claims that he hates peace, “I hate hell, all Montagues and thee,” when Benvolio says he wants to ‘keep the peace’. His vehement declaration reinforces his loathing of the rival family and highlights his aggressive nature. Furthermore, he takes Romeo’s appearance at the party as a personal insult and is determined to avenge it, illustrating his vengeful streak.

Tybalt’s anger is not presented as a short-lived affair – boiling and eventually cooling down; his rage is, on the other hand, toxic, it bubbles and simmers, and does not cease to burn out. This is demonstrated in Act Three, when Tybalt is out looking for Romeo, and insults him upon his arrival. Tybalt is seemingly still infuriated by Romeo’s intrusion at the Capulet party, however newly-married Romeo does not want any disputes and capitulates.
