What is the energy system?

  • The body produces energy at a cellular level.
  • The cells of our body acquire energy from what we eat (food).
  • The cells convert the energy stored in food to a usable form within the body.
  • Utilising the energy that is yielded or storing it if there is no demand for it.
  • There are three cellular pathways: Phosphagen, Anaerobic Glycolosis, Aerobic.

Adenosine Triphosphate  (ATP)

Adenosine Triphosphate is the only type of fuel (energy) the body uses and recognizes. Our bodies require this energy to move, grow, and repair. To provide us with this energy, we digest food, consume liquids; fats, carbohydrates, and proteins (macronutrients). These help replenish ATP stores as the body has limited supply.

The ATP molecule itself is composed of ONE Adenosine molecule, and THREE Phosphate molecules: A-P-P-P.

Energy is released when one of the high-energy bonds is broken and a phosphate molecule is released, resulting in…
