Origins

·         Known as separate one deriving from their strict observance of the law and their concern to be holy and pure in everyday life

·         Ezra is thought to be the first Pharisee as a key person in redefining Judaism after exile

·         People had enough time to discuss religion and the law and began to challenge the authority of the priests and official temple scribes

·         Around 6000 members

·         Worked and taught in synagogues
