- Elizabeth had a strong appreciation for the need to gain / retain loyalty of the politically important members of society
- Patronage central to the operation of the court
- Favours bestowed carefully and to a wide circle to ensure goodwill is maintained
- aim - ensure as many nobles and gentry as possibe were bound through patronage in loyalty to the Crown - therefore few would support uprisings against her
- important at various points during the reign (i.e. the 1569 Rebellion of the Northern Earls)
- crown controlled appointments to offices in local and central government, the Church, law and royal household
- the monarch could distribute land, titles and economic benefits such as the right to collect tax
