The Repressive State Apparatus (police and army) and ideological state Apparatus (family and education). 

Repressive state apparatus is used as a way for the state to prevent rebellions.

Ideological state apparatus is the 'brain washing' parts of society, help you believe capitalist ideas such as meritocracy. 

Althusser believes that Education is an ISA through two functions; reproduction and legitimation. 

Reproduction: reproducing the next generation of workforce through failing students from working class backgrounds.

Legitimation: Making lies such as 'meritocracy' appear as the truth. maintaining false-class consciousness.
