Puritans: key measures and events

  • 1603: James was presented with the Millenary Petition from 1000 moderate Puritans asking for an end to bowing at the name of Jesus, ecclesiastical robes, the administration of baptism by laity and confirmation
  • 1604: the Hampton Court Conference was held to discuss the demands of the Millenary Petition
  • 1604: Richard Bancroft was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury - he ordered all clergy who did not adhere to Bancroft's Canons to be removed
