In recent years there has been an obvious decline in political participation. This essay will study the fall in participation which is demonstrated by several factors including: voter turnout, party membership and the number of people signing petitions.

Voter turnout in all elections has dwindled, including local and national. In 1950, 83.95% of the electorate voted, a high point of voter engagement, compared to 2005, when only 61.5% voted, a relative low point.
