improving the favelas of rio

In 1995 the inter american development bank(IDB) has set aside $200million to help improve some of the favelas in rio de janiero. In 2003 the IDBannounced it is commited to spend over 1 billion dollars on the project. The authorities wanted to replace wooden buildings with brick, widen streets makeing it easier for waste collectors and the emergency sevrices, lay pavements, concrete paths and water pipes. Improve sanitation, healthcare and provide sporting areas, give favela residents work but in return they must pay taxes.
