- Nobles often had disputes with one another.
- Edward IV had appointed local magnates to govern particular areas.
- This worked well as long as the King could control them. These men owned huge amounts of land and were very powerful.
- During the reign of Richard III, many magnates ignored royal commands and sought to increase their authority.
