Horticulture (market gardening)

The Netherlands are located in the north west of Europe and a large part of the country lies below sea-level. The Netherlands has the highest population density in Europe with a population over 16 million.

Horticulture accounts for 42% of the total value of the Netherlands agricultural production and so it is very important as it provides most of the Netherlands agricultural exports. 2,000,000 hectares of the land in the Netherlands is used for agriculture. Cut flowers are the most popular at 16% of the agricultural production. The agricultural land of the Netherlands has been reclaimed from the sea or from the moors and also peat bogs so that small areas are producing excellent yields. Land has also been reclaimed behind the sand dunes of the North Sea coast which is known as polders. Polders are flat
