CHILDREN:
- it used to be considered undesirable for children to mix with adults
- around 1/3 of all workhouse inmates were children following 1834
- in 1834 there was a breach of less eligibility when children were educated in workhouse schools
- in 1844 the Poor Law unions could combine to provide district schools away from the workhouse
- in 1870 Forsters Education Act set up board schools where pauper children could mix with children outside of the workhouse
