ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT;

  • also known as reform movement
  • most notaeble was William morris who was quite influential
  • took place mid-19th century
  • noticed the harsh effects of industrialisation with poor quality in products
  • he vowed to reform commercial art to manufacture better designed goods
  • he set up Morris and Co in 1861 where he created natural dyed fabric, hand woven rugs and wallpaper
  • he also created ladderbacked chairs
  • drew inspiration from flowing shapes of nature
  • today stores like Liberty's still produce products influenced by Morris

ART NOUVEAU:

  • developed at the beginning of the 20th century
  • was built around the use of;
    - simple natural forms
    - curved lines, shapes of plants
    - geometric forms based on Japanese art
  • was used in architecture, glass, fabrics
  • Gustav Klint
  • similar to the arts and crafts movement
  • designers preferred to be called artists
  • rejected industrial mass production
  • only available to wealthy
