The Crucible is set in a theocratic society, where the Church and the State is one. They're strict Puritanism Christians. "Your sins are a public concern," those who do not conform are a threat to society and the rule of God and true religion. "A person is either with this court or he must be counted against us." The trials branded all social deviants as devil-worshippers, therefore inciting the need for them to be purged from the Dichotomy society.


The Crucible shows hysteria tearing apart the community. Hysteria enables people to believe that their previously upstanding neighbours
