Left Realism- Social community based prevention

  • Left realists beleive that the best way to prevent crime is by tackling the social conditions that often cause it. E.g Poverty, unemployment. 
  • Left realists regognise that both the offendors and the victims of crimes that worry people most are found in those with the highest levels of marginality and social exclusion. They emphasise the need to tackle the material and cultural deprivation that are the risk factors of crime.

Left Realist policies

  • They support policies that focus on building strong communities to work out local solutions to local problems and create cohesion. 
  • Left Realists support more democratic  and community control of policing to win public confidence to tackle the causes of crime and to encourage victims to report crime. 
  • They advocate intensive parenting support that gets parents and young offenders together to work out solutions and early intervention strategies. They support projects such as ' Sure start' to help children in the poorest communities.

E.G The Perry pre- school project- This is a research study which started in 1962 in Michigan. It provided high quality pre school education to 3 and 4 year old African American children living in poverty and assesed to be a high at risk of school failure.

123 children that were involved were divided randomly into 2 groups. Some received the high pre school programme and some were assigned to a control group. The average child-teacher ratio was 6:1.  The curriculum emphasised learning 

Criticisms:

- They are 'Soft' on crime as they focus too much on the social causes of crime, downplaying the role of the offender in choosing to commit crime 

- They deflect attention away from more practical crime-prevention meausures, like the tighter…
