Evidence of social inequality between 2 contrasting places- Northwood and Dharavi

Dharavi

  • West Coast India
  • Population: over 20 million people
  • 1000 new migrants per day
  • Low tax rate to attract investment and companies
  • Low revenue to provide public services (water and sanitation) as high-income earners pay little tax
  • Lively cosmopolitan city- growth has come from services (banking), manufacturing, construction, entertainment, and leisure
  • Mumbai's wealth contributes to 33% of India's tax revenue, high demand for housing have sent rent rates higher than London

Evidence and causes of social inequality

Housing

  • 1 million people in 1 square mile
  • 1 maybe 2 rooms, no bigger than 8ft by 8ft, made from anything (wood, talporline, tin)
  • Built on landfill, no planning permission, fire risk from too much wood
  • no windows so no ventilation or light
  • rate infested, unhygienic
  • slept where you ate
  • however, there's a sense of community and family
  • Central houses are more established (12ft by 12ft) with basic electricity

Environmental Quality/health

  • main water pipe surrounded by rubbish
  • raw sewage running openly next to the water pipe
  • no proper sanitation
  • Rationed water- 2 hours per day from 5:30 am till 7:30 am
  • 500 people per 1 toilet
  • Kids play in the contaminated water, leading to TB…
