Causes:
- Impermeable surfaces - human cause - water could not infiltrate the ground so surface run-off is increased and water reaches the river faster
- Physical cause - rainstorm leading to 50mm in 12 hours - ground was saturated and no more water could infiltrate - more surface run-off - water reached the River Rother very quickly - surface run-off increased due to a lot of rainfall in the 2 weeks prior to the flood so the ground was already saturated
