England was divided into 7 kingdoms, Wessex, Northumbria, Essex, East Anglia, Kent, and Sussex.(often engaged in war with one another- which lead to weak defense systems and communication resulting in a large risk of invasion)

VIKINGS

--> People from Scandinavia from 792 onwards, They were fierce, eager to kill and unafraid of death. they plummaged villages for women, food and gold.

Invasions--> saw divided England as an easy target. they saw its fertile soil, easy trade routes, and space (starting to overcrowd in Scandinavian coutnries.)

their longships could easily attack with the open island, consumed with fighting one another so would communicate the biking coming.

  • East anglia fell in 869
  • Mercia fell by 874
