The south:
- Garibaldi found out that his hometown of Nice was being handed over to France and became furious at that thought
- he organised a group of volunteers known as 'The Thousand' and planned to prevent the handing over
- however, since a lot of his followers were Sicillians, his focus was on the revolt that broke out in Sicily in 1860
- after being persuaded to get involved, he sent his followers ahead of himself to tell them help was on its way
- Garibaldi then set sail and landed on Sicily 11th May 1860
- he was greeted warmly and even took charge of the state at one point
