Why did people emigrate to the USA?

'push' factors - immigrants wanted to leave their homeland 

'pull' factors - immigrants were attracted to a new life in the USA. (land available for farming, many employment opportunities) 

The USA was seen as the land of the free. Moreover, the US government followed an 'open door' policy which meant that entry to the country was quite straightforward.
