Tests For Organic Functional Groups

Test - add bromine water

Result - bromine water will turn from brown to colourless

Test - add solid phosphorous pentachloride to the anhydrous compund

Result - steamy fumes of hydrogen chloride will be produced

Test - Warm unknown with aqueous sodium hydroxide for several minutes, don't boil. Allow solution to cool and then add nitric acid until the solution is just acidic to litmus. Then add silver nitrate solution.

Result -

• Give same results as anion tests of chlorides, bromide, iodides.

If all other tests negative, it is an alkane.
