CNS- Central nervous system

  • Comprised of brain and spinal cord
  • Made up of 3 membranes
  • Outer membrane = dura mater
  • Middle membrane = arachnoid
  • Inner membrane = pia mater

PNS- Peripheral nervous system

  • Includes everything outside of the dura mater
  • There are two types of peripheral nerves:
  • afferent neurons = carry information from the neuron -> CNS
  • efferent neurons = carry information from the CNS -> neuron

ANS - Autonomic nervous system

  • Regulates visceral functions such as breathing

Neuron structure

  • Soma/ cell body = responsible for integrating the information derived from the dendrites
  • Dendrites = long spiny projections from the cell body which are covered in receptors and receive information in the form of electrochemical signals
  • Axon = May be very long and covered with a myelin sheath. Also includes the axon hillock which generates the axon potential
  • Axon terminal = The end of the neuron, where synaptic transmission takes place
  • Myelin sheath = Made up of Schwann cells and speeds up the passage of an action potential.  The electrical impulse cannot travel along the myelin sheath and so it jumps between cells

Neuron cytology

  • Large nucleus
  • Abundant ER
  • Abundant Golgi
  • Cytoskeleton is made up of neurofilaments and microtubules

Organelles and other materials are synthesised close to nucleus, they travel away from the nucleus to the point where they are needed by anterograde movement (mediated by kinesins)

Materials travel back to the nucleus by reterograde movement (mediated by MAP-1C)
