Music Videos

Cinematography:

-Opening long shot to set the scene and show location (desert). Used to show how she feels, lonely and empty.

-Pan to the right, positive, showing all her clothes and hats etc, symbolises all of her different personalities.

-Lots of close ups, see emotion more clear.

-Use of medium shots to show what she's wearing, pink suit.

Mise En Scene:

-Huge open desert with Gaga on her own rolling around, suggesting she is stressed/upset, needs her own space.

-She wears a black cap, top and glasses to hide her emotions from the other people in the car, shaking her head also.

-Black connotes fear, aggression, death, evil. But also elegance, authority and rebellion.

-Looking at herself in mirror while getting her makeup done, she is observing her face, looking disappointed, turns to black and white, makeup hides true emotion.

-She is wearing a pink suit while playing the guitar for a lot of the video, she is also wearing a cowboy hat, contrast to the black clothes she was previously wearing. 

-She is in a studio and it's all white around her but she has a shadow on her, hiding emotion

Editing

-Pace is quite fast, lots of cuts, short scenes, some scenes longer than others but overall it's fast.

-The montage of shots compress the time and make everything appear as if it's all happening in a few minutes.

-Overall - long montage with quick cuts and short shots.

Mise En Scene

-Set in dark alley way, no colour, man walking through wearing leather gloves, a long coat and shiny shoes, gives an eerie tone and makes him look suspicious.

-

-Both music videos represent America.

-For Billie Jean, released in the 80s, was the first video by a Black artist to receive heavy rotation on the network MTV. Around that time there was Oprah Winfrey's syndicated talk show in 1986, which helped redefine the image of black characters. 

-“Billie Jean” opened up the door for other artists of color to be featured on MTV.

-Always write about if it's a positive or negative representation.

-Consider how this representation has been constructed (Media Language)
