Lake Nyos - Gas Eruption - 1986

  • An active crater lake formed from eruption 5 centuries ago
  • Contain large amounts of CO2 dissolved at depth
  • Possible explanation - Gradual heating from below the lake caused rollover and gas release
  • Gas seeped out of lake and was invisible - killed all living things within a 25km radius - 1700 people
  • Managed - electronic pump used in 2001 to degas the lake

Mount Ontake - September 2014

  • At least 36 people killed
  • No signs of warning as there was no lava, only gas and ash
  • Volanic debris settled within 4km of the peak

Nevado Del Ruiz - Lahar - 1985

  • Colombia 
  • 13th November 1985, eruptive activity had increased, causing melting of the ice cap
  • 10pm - lahars ran down east slope over Chinchina, killing 1800 people
  • 11pm - travelled westwards at 45km to Aermero, burying it in 8m of mud, killing 22 000

  • 1973 Eldfell Eruption in Iceland - sea water sprayed to cool lava
  • Mt Pinatubo - drained a lake to prevent lahars

Japan EQ Nov 2014

  • 6.7 magnitude - pacific plate subducted under eurasian plate
  • 39 people injured
  • Damage to 450 buildings
  • Blackouts affected 1600 homes
  • Parts of damaged homes coverd with palstic to protect from predicted snowfall
  • Emergency services rescued all 21 people who were trapped under collapsed buildings
