Data - numbers, words, images and sound - details that are meaningless as they lack relevance. Raw facts and figures. Arises from: surveys, output of a management informatio system, transactions, results of an experiment or automatic measurement of environmental quantitites.

Information - comes from the processing of data - it has been converted to give it meaning and it is organised in some way.

Knowledge - how to interpret and apply informaton by applying rules. Decisions can be made on the information recieved
