What was the journey like west?

Via south america: six months of seasickness, rotten food, rancid water and boredoem.

Through panama canal: Quickest option but travellers risked malaria  and cholera.

California trail: 2000 mile walk in the heat with little food or water.

many travellers were not prepared for the harshness of the journey. Supplies ran out quickly. Those wihtout money died.

Routes became crowded with wagons . Dust made it hard for people to see and breathe. Reulting in diarhoea, illness and death.
