  • gold was discovered in California in 1848 and within months a reported 40,000 men were crossing the great plains.
  • men wanted to find gold and come back rich.
  • By the end of 1848 there were 90,000 miners in California, there nickname was the forty niners.
  • The large number of miners saw the surface deposits of gold taken, this heralded the end of the 1848 Gold rush.
  • Gold was discovered again in the Black hills of Dakota in 1874. these hills were sacred to the plains indians and when the miners swarmed over them hoping to find gold, tensions between the plains indians and the settlers increased.
