War Economy (1939-42)

The early victories allowed Germany to plunder countries like Poland with harvests taken from France. In all occupied countries, Germany reduced food consumption.

Dec 1939 - Declaration of war economy (1941 - 47% of industry was for the war effort)

1941 - War economy failing, lack of central control of occupied territories

1942 - Albert Speer in charge of Armerments and war production. he planned factorires under a single department of the governemt, employed more women and skilled professionals were kept from the military.

War Economy 1943 - 45

Jan 1943 - Nazis lose Battle of Stalingrad to the Russians

18th Feb 1943 - Goebbels' total war speech told people to save fuel, work harder. It led to 1/3 million women being made to work, anything non contributory ended like sports etc, and shortages of clothes led to an increase in swapping which was encouraged by the Nazis
