The Fall Of Edessa

DECEMBER 1144

Edessa was mos exposed out of all the Crusader States

JOSCELIN II- poor relations with Principality of Antioch and Tripoli                            

ZENGI(Seljuk Turk of Mosul and Aleppo)-mined under the city walls

JOSCELIN- was absent at this time

BALDWIN III- Child king of JERUSALEM- hampered relief attempts

KINGS OF FRANCE AND GERMANY GOT INVOLVED- FRANCE LOUIS VII

PAPAL BULL-implored Christians to reclaim lost territory- 1145 EUGENIUS III

MARCH 1146 BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX-reissued the bull and toured for 7 months.

THOUSANDS RESPONCED TO BERNARD. Including CONRAD III of Gerany

The German Crusade

CONRAD III- Left in MidMay 1147.

MEANWHILE: Norman king of Sicily was attacking Manuel's Byxantium empire. Manuel responded by making PEACE TREATY WITH SELJUK TURKS OF RUM.

10th SEPTEMBER conrad reached Constantinople.

Manuel suggeste Conrad follow West coastal route of Asia Minor to Annatolia but conrad IGNORED advice ad traveled inland without LOUIS VII.

25th OCTOVER 1147- TURKS DESTROYED CONRADS FORCES AT DORYLAEUM

Remnants joined French forcs setting out from Constantinople

The French Crusade

LOUIS TOOK MANUELS ADVICE and took the Westerly route to Attalia- however they suffered heavy losses due to Winter condition and limited supplies. 

LOUIS AND BARPNS AGREED ARMY WAS TO WEAK AND SOULD GO OVER SEA- not enough boats so he abandoned the infantry and many perished.

LOUIS ARRIVED AT ANTIOCH IN MARCH 1148- PRINCE RAYMOND OF ANTIOCH urged him to ATTACK ALEPPO- ruled by Nur Ad-Din.

LOUIS HEADED STRAIGHT TO JERUSALEM and refused to help Raymond- this offended him and so he refused to join the crusade.

The seige of Damascus

LOUIS AND CONRAD DECIDED ON JUNE 24th 1148 TO MOVE TO DAMASCUS.

Damascus was facing INTERNAL SQUABBLES amongst FRANKISH BARONS split between Baldwin III and Melisende (his mother).

SEIGE POORLY CONDUCTED- 24th JULY 1148 crusaders arrived at well watered orchard

27th JULY 1148-FRANKISH BARONS persuaded crusaders to move to EASTERN BARRON PLAINS- no water and it was the middle of summer.

28th JULY 1148- Crusaders withdrew

CRUSADE ENDED IN A HUMILIATING RETREAT

OUTCOMES OF 2ND CRUSADE

Barcelona tok TORTOSAIN in DECEMBER 1148

Bitter recriminations especially againsts BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX. Papacy inspired crusade but did little to ORGANISE and CO-ORDINATE it.

BYZANTIUM- Blamed for losses in Asia Minor but the Pope did little to preapre Manuel for the two large ill disiplined armies.

NEW DIVISIONS- Franks, western settlers. Byzantium, crusaders. Rise in Nur addin
