THE LEARNING THEORY OF ATTACHMENT

  • TWO THEORIES TO EXPLAIN WHY ORGANISMS ATTACH
  • THIS IS ONE OF THEM
  • THIS STATES THAT HUMANS HAVE DRIVERS SUCH AS HUNGER AND COMFORT
  • THESE DRIVERS NEED TO BE REDUCED FOR HEALTHY LIVING
  • `INFANTS WILL FORM ATTACHMENTS IN ORDER TO GET THE CAREGIVER TO HAVE TO SUPPRESS THESE DRIVERS

EVALUATION - WEAKNESSES

  • SCHAFER & EMERSON CONDUCTED STUDIES THAT SHOWED THAT BABIES PREFER TO ATTACH TO PEOPLE WHO GIVER THE BEST TYPE OF CARE, NOT NECESSARILY WHAT IS GIVEN TO THEM
  • HARLOW'S STUDIES SHOWED THAT THE MONKEYS PREFERRED TO ATTACH TO THE COMFORT GIVEN, NOT THE FOOD SUPPLIED
  • ATTACHMENTS SHOUDL FADE IF THERE IS NO REINFORCEMENT. HOWEVER, CHILDREN ARE STILL ATTACHED TO THEIR PARENTS EVEN IF THEY ARE REMOVED FROM THEM
  • PUNISHMENTS SHOULD REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF ATTACHMENT BEHAVIOUR OCCURRING BUT CHILDREN CAN STILL ATTACH TO ABUSIVE PARENTS
  • BABIES CAN FORM ATTACHMENTS WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT A CREAGIVER
