The Aims

  • To study the impact on preschool provision on children's intellectual,social and behavioural development.
  • To investigate whether some types of preschool settings were better than others within the UK.

The Procedure

  • A logitudinal study of 3000 children in the UK. Children from a wide range of backgrounds (children from a wide range of backgrounds).
  • Researchers created developmental profiles for each child from the age of 3 to 7 years old consisting of SATS results, preschool staff, parents and school teachers.
  • 2 groups-those who were in day care and those who stayed at home (control group).

The Findings

  • Found high quality care improved social, intellectual and behavioural development.
  • The earlier the child starts day care the more improvement seen.
  • Better sociability, independence and concentration were found in children the longer they were in day care.
