Bloody Mary - Does She Deserve That Name?

Mary Burning People At The Stake

Mary I was a Catholic extremist - she burnt 284 Protestants to death.

She had rebels hanged in their own home parishes.

Mary I believed she was cleansing England like this.

Other Tudor monarchs also murdered lots of people - don't you think they deserve a nickname?

Mary and Thomas Cranmer

First of all, Mary blamed Thomas Cranmer for her parents' split.

When she became Queen, she sued Thomas Cranmer.

Then, she publicly shamed him as a Protestant heretic.

Thomas Cranmer recanted Protestantism.

He admitted to Catholicism 7 times.

Still, Mary got him burnt to his death.

Thomas Cranmer died in 1556.

Mary . . . and that traumatic childhood.

She was physically ill and described as obstinate and difficult.

As a child, she heard rumours of her becoming executed.

When 18, she was sent to live with Elizabeth and was treated very badly.

She was forbidden from seeing her mother - and her mother died without seeing her daughter for one last time.
