Biology: Year 9 Term 3: Atherosclerosis

?

Steps to atherosclerosis

I) LDLC (bad cholesterol) goes into artery walls

II) Cells 'eat' LDLC and are absorbed into the artery wall

III) Plaque forms as the body creates a fibrous layer to protect

IV) Arteries narrow as the elastic layer can't stretch

V) Calcium deposits reduce the ability to widen the artery

VI) Plaque can rupture and cause a blood clot, or grows and completely blocks the artery
