Fluid Mosaic Model

  • Phospholipd molecules form continuos double layer (bilayer)
  • Fluid - constantly moving
  • Mosaic - arrangement of protein molecules

Proteins in layer:

  • Across membrane = transmembrance
  • outside = extrinsic
  • inside = intrinsic

Trigylcerides

  • Gycerol + 3 Fatty acids
  • Fatty Acid Tail are hydrophobic  (repel water)
  • Form by condensation reactions
2 of 5

Fatty Acids

Saturated:
-No double bonds between carbon molecules

Unsaturated:
-one or more double bonds (C=C)

Phospholipds

  • A lot like trigylcerides
  • One fatty acid replaced with phospholipid head (hydrophilic) on other side
4 of 5

Emulsion Test

A test for fats:

  • Shakes test substance with ethanol and pour solution into water
  • Lipid will shows as a milky emulsion
