Artificial control of fertility

-Most widely used ways of contolling fertility-the contraceptive pill 

-Pill contains female hormones-particually oestrogen 

-Hormones affect your ovaries-prevent release of egg

-Pill stops production of FSH-no egg mature in ovaries

-Have to take it regularly or artificial hormone levels drop-bodys own hormones take over

-Reasons for infertility;

  • Lack of female hormones- women don't make enough FSH to stimulate egg

-Artificial FSH can be used as a fertility drug

-Stimulates egg in ovay to mature and triggers oestrogen production

-Fertility drugs also used when couples are trying to have a baby by IVF-in virtro fertilisation

-If your fallopian tubes are damaged eggs cannot reach your womb-can't get pregnant naturally

-Doctors remove egg from ovary-fertalise them with sperm outside body-place developing embryo into the uterus of the mother 

-To produce as many ripe eggs as possible for IVF, the women is given fertility drugs as part of her treatment

-However, it's expensive and doesnt always work

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages;

  • Help make families smaller
  • Less poverty-fewer people to feed
  • Control population in countires such as China 

Disadvantages;

  • Pill not available everywhere-lack of money,education and doctors
  • Can cause health problems
  • Health risk for mother
  • Expensive for society
  • Cost hospitals a lot to keep the very small premature babies alive 
  • Ethical issues
