USER OBTAINS SOFTWARE ON DVD OR DOWNLOADS FROM THE INTERNET--> USER INSTALLS SOFTWARE ON COMPUTER OR FILE SERVER

ADVANTAGES

-works without being online and you hold the license to use the software

- you control access to computer = good security

DISADVANTAGES

- takes up a large home amount of file space

- must download and install upgrades and patches to fix bugs

-all data is stored locally so it must be backed up

2- HOSTED SOFTWARE (SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE)

USER LOGS IN THROUGH INTERNET TO USE SOFTWARE WHEN NEEDED--> SOFTWARE RUNS ON A WEB SERVER OVER THE INTERNET

ADVANTAGES

-software doesn't take up any file space on your computer

- allows users from different parts of the world to work on the same document at the same time

DISADVANTAGES 

- cannot work without an internet connection

-not as secure- hosting company might be targetted by online hackers

- response time depends on the speed of the network

PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE is developed by a company, you usually have to pay to use it on yoru computer or online

MICROSOFT WORD IS AN EXAMPLE OF PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE  is developed by volunteers who will gradually improve it. it is free to use on your computer or online

OPENOFFICE.ORG IS AN EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE
