Organisations need information in order to function and this information can come from a variety of sources such as:

• Files on disk
• Files on removable media
• CD-ROM's
• Databases
• The internet

Applications Software

• Applications software is software that is capable of doing a specific job
• A job is called an application
• Examples include word-processing software, CAD software and accounts software

General Purpose Software

Is applications software that:

• Can be used in any type of business
• Includes word-processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing and presentation

Speciailist Software

Is applications software that:

• Is specific to the business
• Includes kitchen design software, software for running a garage, hairdressing booking system etc.
