All devices are connected to a single shared cable
Shared cable is called the backbone
Signals are passed in either direction along the backbone
Advantages of bus topology networks:
· Cheap ­ because of small amount of cable needed
· Easy to install ­ simple cable runs
· Easy to add extra devices to the network
· If a workstation/terminal goes down the others will continue
Disadvantages of bus topology networks:
· Only suitable for small networks of less than 12 devices
· Heavy traffic can cause network failure and delays
