Psychology unit 4 media revision
Research into intense fandom-celebrity worship
Celebrity attitude scale
Description
McMuctheon developed a questionnaire which suggested that there were 32
different types of worship. Maltby then suggested there were 3 types. These are
entertainment-social (gossip about a celebrity), intense personal (obsessive and
compulsive feelings) and borderline pathological (uncontrollable fantasies about
the celebrity).
Evaluation
Good internal reliability and good population validity as the sample used was
good as it used a large number of participants (1732) and a large age range
(14-62)
Issues with external validity as McCutcheon found 32 types of celebrity
worship but Maltby found 3.
Social desirability bias may have reduced the number of borderline pathological
people.
