Relative Isotopic Mass ­ mass of an atom compared to 1/12 the mass of an atom of
carbon12.
Relative Atomic Mass ­ weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with 1/12
of the mass of an atom of carbon12.
Relative Molecular Mass ­ weighted mean mass of a formula unit compared with 1/12 of
the mass of an atom of carbon12.
Mole ­ the amount of any substance containing as many atoms as there are in 12g of carbon
12.
Molar mass ­ mass per mole of a substance in g mol^1
Empirical formula ­ simplest mole ratio of elements in a compound
Molecular formula ­ actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
Molar volume ­ volume per mole of a gas. At RTP molar volume is 24 dm^3 mol^1
Concentration ­ amount of solute in mol dissolved per dm^3 of solution
Standard solution ­ solution of known concentration. Standard solutions are normally used
in titrations.

replaced by a metal ion or other positive ion.
Hydrated ­ a crystalline compound containing water molecules.
Anhydrous ­ a substance with no water molecules.
Oxidation number ­ a measure of the number of electrons that an atom uses to bond with
atoms of another element
Oxidation is loss of electrons. Reduction is gain of electrons.
