Was the growth of un-employment after 1929 the main reason why the Nazi party was able to take
power in Germany in 1933? (16)
The increase in un-employment after 1929 was due to the wall st. Crash which led to the great
depression which was a worldwide recession. It destroyed the German economy because Germany
was reliant on American loans to pay reparations. The loans came from the Dawes plan which said
that America would lend money to Germany to help it pay reparations but if America's economy was
in trouble Germany had to pay back all the money that they were loaned. This destroyed the German
economy and meant that many businesses and companies closed down and many Germans became
un-employed. This helped the Nazi's take power because they promised `arbiet und brot' (work and
bread). This meant that many Germans wanted to vote for the Nazi party because it meant that they
would have work.
Nazi propaganda also helped the Nazi party come to power because they used the un-employment
problem in there propaganda to convince people to vote for them by using the slogan `arbiet und
brot' on their posters conveying a strong message that they were going to make Germany strong
again. This is why many Germans voted for them help them come to power. This links to the increase
in un-employment because they used this in there propaganda to convince people to vote for them.
The fear of communism also helped them to come to power because many people such as rich
business men didn't want a communist government because that would mean that there businesses
would be given to the people and all their money would be taken. Hitler used their fear to his
advantage by promising to crush communism if his party came to power. He also befriended the
business men so that they would donate money to his party. He did this because it would mean that
he could spend more money on propaganda such as posters and newspapers. This also made the
party look strong. The fear of communism links to Nazi propaganda because not only did they use it in
there propaganda they used the fear of communism to get rich business men to donate money to
the party. They then used this money to fund the propaganda. The fear of communism also links to
the increase in un-employment because many rich people feared that there would be a communist
up-rising because of the increase in un-employment.
The increase in un-employment links to the Nazi propaganda because they used the un-employment
problem in there propaganda and promised that if they came to power they would provide more
work and make Germany strong. It also links to the fear of communism because it increased the fear
of a communist up-rising because so many people were out of work. Nazi propaganda also links to
the fear of communism because they used it in there propaganda and they used it to get money from
rich business men to fund the propaganda. Overall I think that the rise in un-employment after 1929
was the main reason why the Nazi party came to power in 1933 because it was used in propaganda
to get people to vote for the Nazi party and also increased the fear of the communists which led to
an increase in donations to the Nazi party. These donations funded the propaganda and were one of
the main reasons that they gained so many votes. Therefore I think that the increase in
un-employment was the most important reason why the Nazi party came to power.
