What are Chlorofluorocarbons???
Chlorofluorocarbons also known as CFCs, contain carbon atoms
with chlorine and fluorine atoms attached.
How to work out the formula from the CFC number: You add 90 to
the CFC number to give a new number. For example, CFC-11
generates the number 101 (11+90)
The first digit of the new number tells you how many carbon atoms
there are. The second number tells you the number of hydrogen,
and the third the number of fluorine. You calculate the number of
chlorines from the formula:
Cl = 2(C+1)-H-F.
So, CFC-11 has 1 carbon atom, 0 hydrogen atoms, 1 fluorine atom
and 3 chlorine atoms.…read more

The Structure of CFCs
Well, the structure depends on the
number the CFC is. The top CFC
molecule is CFC-11 because it has 1 carbon atom,
no hydrogen atoms and 1 fluorine atom.
Therefore the new number is 101. So
if you take off 90, you get 11.
Therefore It must be CFC-11. The
bottom CFC molecule is CFC-12
because it has 1 carbon atom and

A History of CFCs
The invention of CFCs in the late 1920s and early 1930s
started when safer alternatives to the sulphur dioxide
and ammonia refrigerants were wanted.
CFCs were chosen because they are safe and have
advanced chemical properties. CFCs are low in toxicity,
non-flammable, noncorrosive, and nonreactive with
other chemicals, and have wanted thermal-
conductivity and boiling-point characteristics. These
features led to increased demand as more uses arose
for CFC use.…read more

The Many Uses of CFCs
Applications use the low toxicity, low reactivity, and the
low flammability of CFCs. Uses include refrigerants,
blowing agents, propellants in medicinal applications,
and degreasing solvents.
