What was the earth like 4 billion years ago?
The earths atmosphere was predominantly carbon dioxide, ammonia and water vapour due to the amount of volcanic activity.
1 of 24
What was the earth like 3 billion years ago?
The earths temperature fell and the water vapour in the atmosphere condensed into oceans.
2 of 24
What was the earth like 2 billion years ago?
the evolution of photosynthesising organisms started to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and increase the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.
3 of 24
What was the earth like 1 billion years ago?
Over time oxygen molecules started to turn into ozone molecules that is a protective layer over the earth. It shields the earth from harmful energy rays and allows development of new life.
4 of 24
What is our atmosphere like today?
Air contains about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon and other noble gases.
5 of 24
What are pollutants?
Pollutants are chemicals that can harm the environment and our health. Pollutants that harm the environment can also harm humans indirectly.
6 of 24
What is a greenhouse gas?
a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons are examples of greenhouse gases.
7 of 24
What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)?
Carbon monoxide is a very poisonous gas that blocks oxygen from being carried in the blood and can suffocate you.
8 of 24
What is Sulphure Dioxide (SO₂)?
SO₂ reacts with H₂O and O₂ to make acid rain (H₂SO₄). This can damage buildings and harm nature.
9 of 24
What are particulates?
They stick surfaces and make them dirty. They can be breathed into the lungs and can cause breathing problems or asthma.
10 of 24
What are Nitrogen Oxides?
NO reacts with O₂ to make NO₂. This happens within a few metres of the exhaust pipe. It can worsen asthma.
11 of 24
What are elements?
An element is a substance made from one type of atom only.
12 of 24
What are atoms?
The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist. They make up all matter.
13 of 24
What are compounds?
A compound is a substance made from two or more elements that have reacted chemically with each other.
14 of 24
What is a nucleus.
the positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass.
15 of 24
What are protons and neutrons and electrons.
Neutrons are neutral, but protons and electrons are electrically charged: protons have a relative charge of +1 and electrons have a relative charge of -1.
16 of 24
What is the atomic number and atomic mass
The atomic number is the amount of protons and electrons in the nucleus whereas the atomic mass is the amount of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
17 of 24
What is combustion?
Combustion is a chemical reaction that occurs when fuels burn, releasing energy as heat. Many of the pollutants in the atmosphere are produced through the combustion of fossil fuels (gas, coal and natural gas).
18 of 24
What is complete combustion?
Fossil fuels consist mainly of compounds called hydrocarbons. A hydrocarbon contains only hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms. When it is burned in air, carbon dioxide and water are produced.
19 of 24
What is incomplete combustion?
If a fuel is burned and there is not enough oxygen in the air, carbon particulates or carbon monoxide may be produced. Incomplete combustion occurs in car engines and produces soot (carbon).
20 of 24
What is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction.
21 of 24
What is the process of wet scrubbing?
The sulfur dioxide is removed from flue gases by wet scrubbing, using an alkaline slurry or seawater. During wet scrubbing, the flue gas containing the sulfur dioxide is brought into contact with a slurry of either limestone (calcium carbonate)...
22 of 24
What is the process of wet scrubbing?
or lime (calcium oxide) usually sprayed onto the pollutant gas flow, where the sulfur dioxide is absorbed onto its surface. The absorbed sulfur dioxide is then converted to calcium sulfate. During seawater scrubbing, flue gases are washed...

What is the process of wet scrubbing?
...with seawater, which dissolves the sulfur oxides. The acidic dissolved sulfur oxides will react with alkalis to produce sulfate salts.
