Categorising texts grouping acronym:
S ­ Spoken or written mode? (or multi-modal?)
What effects does the mode have on the texts?
What evidence is there to show that the texts are written/spoken? E.g if it is
spoken, are there non-fluency features such as fillers?
There may also be texts which are trying to replicate speech, e.g there might be a
text which uses words like "Woah!". Try and explain why they might be doing

What is the purpose?
How does the text show this? E.g for a persuading purpose, personal pronouns like
"you" may be used to create direct address with the audience in order to gain
There may often be differences in the presentation of purposes in different texts, if
so, sub-categorise. E.g, Two texts may use more imperative forms of persuasion with
the use of exclamative sentences or imperative verbs like "do this!" Whereas, two
other texts may be more subtle and use adjectives to persuade the audience.

Who is/are the audience?
How can the audience affect the lexis? E.g if the audience is younger there may be
more colloquial language.
If it is a transcript, how will the relationship between the participants affect the
conversation? E.g if a teacher is speaking to a pupil in the transcript it will be much
more formal than a pupil-to-pupil conversation.
G ­ Genre?
What is the genre and how can this link with graphological features? E.g a
website/newspaper would have columns to limit the space used but also, makes the
text look cumbersome and detailed.
