Were the Nazis during 1934-45 a popular dictatorship?

Advantages

  • Hitler reversed aspects of the treaty of versatile: re-arment of germany, re-occuping the rhineland- were seen as bringing order to germany unlike the chaos of the weimar republic
  • Used indirect stimulus (tax cuts and gov grants designed to boost spending)=greater employment
  • Used Direct stimulus (gov set up schemes that employed people to work on government policies)=greater employment
  • Nazi's work creation reduced employment between 33' and 34' 2.8 million jobs were created
  • Schacht's new plan allowed the german economy to grow and solved the balance of payment problems and allowed to country to re-arm
  • Schacht was widely respected by business leaders and therefore were willing to use the gov tax breaks and employ more workers
  • Ruthless actions against 'enemies of the people' and building a pure race were supposed by many germans as the key to germanys strength and security (final solution, Nuremberg laws, persecution of disabled people, sterilisation)
  • Hitlers rule only came to an end by his defeat in war and suicide
  • No political revolutions unlike weimar

Disadvantages

  • however, Nazi imposed fear upon the people and the people would most likely not speak out against the nazis for fear of repercussions
  • Active resistance: little between 1933-39 but there was three assassination attempts against hitler in 35', 38' and 39'.
  • non conformity was widespread: many jokes that poked fun at aspects of regime or senior nazi's along with widespread cynicism about the regime-groups of nonconformist young people began to emerge who rejected the militarism of official youth culture
  • catholic church remained independent of the nazi government throughout their whole regime- able to speak out against some nazi policies such as the T4 euthanasia programme
  • stauffenberg bomb plot- most famous example of nazi resistance (stauffenberg was a senior officer and was not a nazi) In June 1944 he planted a bomb intending to kill hitler= failed plot, hitler survived
  • from 1942 became clear germany was not winning the war- Kreisau circle (group of members from elite society and catholic and protestant priests) did not plot to overthrow regime but did supply allies information about regimes weakness

Evaluation

popular opposition was never serious enough that it threatened the regime unlike the Kaiser who was brought down by mass strikes and workers revolution, the nazi's were defeated by allied troops. Therefore whilst there is no doubt that the Nazi's were popular among the majority, their threat of violence made those who did oppose them, not publicly announce it therefore it is hard to judge whether the Nazi's actually were actually popular among the german people or they were only doing it in fear of repercussions.
