Causes

  • Greece and Turkey needed economic and military aid due to the threat of communism
  • Truman announced it would be US Policy to "support peoples who resist being enslaved by armer minorities or by outside pressure"

Effects

  • Led directly to the Marshall Plan
  • Between 1945-53 the USA loaned $44.3 billion to countries across the world
  • Eastern European countries rejected Marshall plan
  • USA went from an isolation policy to an intervention policy
  • Under the doctrine, the USA was prepared to send money, equipment and advice to any country threatened by a communist takeover
