The educational/behavioural approach

Advantages

  • Pester Power.
  • Can be aimed directly at a specific audience e.g. anorexia in teenage girls' magazines.
  • People learn and change their behaviour accordingly e.g. sugar and fat intake.
  • Provides information for people to make well informed choices independently.
  • If enough people are educated, the knowledge becomes common sense.

Disadvantages

  • People may feel preached or dictated to and so resist campaigns and promotions.
  • People may throw away leaflets without reading them.
  • Many people don't watch television advertisements.
  • Email and website promotions are limited to those with internet access.
  • Health websites are rarely used.

Evaluation

Definition: The educational/behavioural approach is about providing information so that the public understand health issues. The approach aims for people to adopt a healthier lifestyle e.g. school talks, support groups, documentaries, leaflets, TV advertisements, magazines, billboards and posters.
