Strengths
- Up to August 1915 25,000men enlisted
- National Volunteers had a number in excess of 100,000
- more radical strains of nationalism failed in their attests to mount any serious challenge.
|
Weaknesses
- War became increasingly unpopular as Redmond's lack of interest transformed the Irish Volunteers into demoralised and apathetic force.
- IPP left in Limbo with HR seen as a hollow victory. Support of war had left the IPP without a programme of action.
|
|
Opportunities
- IPP comfortably dealt with any electoral challenge mounted by more radical nationalists.
- 8 by-elections in Nationalist constituencies, 3 of which were uncontested.
- 3 Rural seats won by loyal Redmondites
- 2 Urban by-elections won by IPP
- Redmond still enjoyed the support of clear majority in Nationalist Ireland.
|
Threats
- IPP were exposed to attacks from the more advanced Nationalist groups which had galvanised together due to their opposition to war.
- Many IPP MP's were aging figures who had lost their fire after they achieves their goals in Rural Ireland.
- UIL polled 2,299 votes to SF Bernard Hamill's 1,810-too close for comfort.
